Art Therapy
Hi I'm Leslie!

I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and Registered Art Therapist based in the Bay Area. I enjoy working with a variety of populations helping them heal through creative self-expression. I am inclusive and enjoy working with diverse clients including BIPOC, immigrants, LGBTQIA, and polyamorous communities. I often work with issues related to anxiety, depression, trauma, grief, relationships and sexuality. I am a lover of the outdoors and incorporate eco based art therapy in my practice. One of the favorite roles in my work is the opportunity to introduce new mediums and artistic experiences to my clients. I find that through engaging in art therapy, my clients have an opportunity to gain insight, connect to themselves and their environment, and begin their healing journey.

What is art therapy?

Art therapy is an approach to therapy that combines talk therapy with creative self expression. Through the art process you are able to tap into a part of self that you don’t get to see, and give it an artistic expression, bringing life to images and memories buried in your subconscious. The process of creating is part of the therapy itself, and provides many benefits including mindfulness, self regulation, and confidence building. The product that is created is seen as a visual expression of self, and provides new insight and perspective. Specialized training aids the therapist in supporting the client through this process, and discussing the art in a non stigmatizing, safe way. Art therapy is for everyone, and no prior experience with art is required to participate.

What would an art therapy session be like?

Session usually starts with a verbal check in, followed by an art directive and ending with verbal processing of the art experience. The art making process is always an invitation and not a requirement. Art modalities that are incorporated into session vary from drawing and painting, to collage and working with clay. Eco art therapy takes place in the outdoors using natural art materials. This type of art therapy is provided on a case by case basis depending on the needs and preferences of the client.
